Coca Cola Advert: Analysed

The advert starts with a wide-long shot which sets the Mise-en-scene. The colours are bland and nothing seems to stand out. Two men are walking up and down a line.Mountains are in the background and everything is in focus. They are in a desert this is suggested in the desolate background with no buildings except a small hut and satellite and everything is pretty much dusty and dull. The shot then switches to a medium shot with the two men in focus and everything around them slightly blurred (out of focus. They are walking on either side of a bar constantly looking at each other showing owner of a territory. Their costumes suggest some kind of authority, this is shown in the commmander badges and big hats which are used by metropolitan police. The colour of their costumes (brown and green) sets the mood of dull and worn out. The next shot goes into a medium close up and the guy in green- his face looks sweaty, worn out, tired and serious. The next shot is also a medium close up of the other guy in brown mirroring the same expression this suggest they feel the exact same way. The next shot is a wide shot as it shows them and the background then something flies in and it switches shot to the guards looking down at the paper showing some significance. The next shot is a close up of the scrunched up paper flying directly infront of the green guard's feet. The shot then switches to a close up of the green guards face still serious but slightly puzzled as it shows that he is curious about the piece of paper. His sword then becomes the focus of the next shot as it jams straight down the middle of the paper. The guard then holds it at arms length away from him and he then chucks it on the other side with a disgusted look on his face. The shot then goes into a wide shot with the two guards in focus and the green guard straighten out his uniform showing he was being distracted and is trying to get back in place. It then goes into a close up of the green guard and the brown one out of focus. The green guard stops and realizes something is being opened behind him like a bottle. It then switches to a medium shot of the brown guard drinking coca cola- the colour of the coca cola is red which then becomes the brightest part of the shot showing it's importance as it stands out to everything else. The brown guard closes his eyes as he drinks it showing a satisfied look on his face. The green guard slowly turns around and notices what is happening behind him the shot then switches ack to the brown guard which shows his face looking down at the coca cola bottle with a hint of a smile he then looks back up and notices the disheartening look on the other guards face and his hint of a smile drops. The shot then switches to the guards hand dipping into a tub of ice with one coca cola left, the position it being in shows the entire label but only half the bottle showing the label is important so the audience can take notice. The shot goes back to a wide shot of the brown guard infront of the green guard , the shot switches again to a medium long shot of the coca cola being handed over to the green gaurd he hesitantly stretches his arm over to get it but steps back the shot then goes back to a long shot of both guards on either side of the pole, the coca cola is then firmly place on the floor (still showing the label) and the guard then draws out the sword marking new territory trying to hand over the coca cola. The shot switches to medium shot of the green guards eyes looking from either side as if thinking whether he should take it our not but he then gives in slowly bends and picks up the coca cola (label still clearly showing). The music then becames intense as they both drink the coca cola (label still showing). They both take it away from their lips and breath a sigh of relief with a mile on their faces suggesting they enjoyed a cool drink in the hot desert. They both look at each other then realize the smile on their faces and they immediately straighten up and look around suspiciously as they notice what just happened and continue walking in opposite direction. The shot then switches to a white background with a red bottle spinning into the shot saying 'coca cola'and it slows down and stops with a animated banner which says 'open happiness' (the logo) fizzing in. The advert then abruptly ends leaving that final picture in the audiences mind. Coca Cola - Open Happiness.

Mise en scène

A Mise en scène is the way a scene in a play, film or picture is set out. It's the arrangement of the actors, the props, scenery, costumes, the movement of the camera, lighting, set design, sound effects and the general still of the scene. The Mise en scène is an effective way of setting a mood, atmosphere or getting a point across in a piece of media.
